Science Orientation Netherlands (WON) strengthens academic skills and critical thinking in secondary (vwo) pre-university science education through inquiry-based and design-based learning, supported by a network of 50 schools.
2019
As day chairman of the national WON manifestation on 25 September 2019 at the Amsterdam Public Library, I played a connecting role in guiding and moderating this concluding event within the network of Science Orientation Netherlands. Together with the organisers, we carefully designed the day's programme and the run-up to it, focusing on strengthening science orientation and inquiry-based learning within the vwo curriculum.
The event aimed to promote academic skills and critical attitude among vwo students through inquiry-based and design-based learning. The event provided a platform for knowledge exchange, where teachers, students and education professionals came together to share experiences and gain new insights.
Together with the organisers, I helped shape the day's programme, with specific focus on relevant and interactive knowledge exchange sessions. During the event, I led discussions, introduced and interviewed speakers and ensured a smooth transition between sessions, promoting an inclusive atmosphere. My role also included moderating and facilitating the event, actively encouraging interaction between participants to ensure the quality of the exchanges. In addition, I facilitated several sessions focused on the concept of inquiry-based and design-based learning. This included giving informative interviews and holding discussions with experts and participants to delve deeper into the application of these concepts within education. In the run-up to the event, I also conducted several interviews where we delved deeper into how inquiry-based and design-based learning can be integrated into the vwo curriculum.
In fulfilling my role as chairman of the day, I ensured that all participants could share their ideas in a way that appealed to the students. This created constructive and respectful dialogue, which strengthened the cooperation of attendees and those involved in the network.
The WON programme and event was a great success and resulted in even stronger cooperation between participating schools and wider recognition of the importance of science orientation within the vwo curriculum. The exchange of ideas and best practices during the event led to concrete recommendations and plans for the further implementation of inquiry-based and design-based learning.
Participants in the WON programme and the event gained valuable insights on the implementation of science orientation and the role of inquiry-based and design-based learning in education. Teachers gained a better understanding of how to integrate the concept effectively into their own teaching practices as a result.
