Science Orientation Netherlands (WON)

Science Orientation Netherlands (WON)

Wetenschapsoriëntatie Nederland (WON) is a network of schools that integrates science orientation into the curriculum. It promotes critical thinking and academic skills through inquiry-based learning.

Mission

Science Orientation Netherlands (WON) strives to give science orientation a central place in the vwo curriculum. WON focuses on developing academic skills and stimulating a curious, critical attitude in pupils. This is done by putting inquiry-based learning and learning to investigate at the centre, so that pupils not only gain knowledge, but also develop skills that are essential for their future studies and lives.

Vision

WON believes in the power of cooperation between schools, where teachers and pupils inspire each other and learn from each other. The network of WON schools acts as a vibrant community where equality, trust and knowledge sharing are key. This collaboration ensures innovative and challenging education that contributes to students' success, both during their time at school and afterwards in higher education and their further careers.

Societal Role

WON has a significant impact on both education and wider society. By teaching students to think critically and inquisitively, WON contributes to the formation of engaged and well-informed citizens. WON's approach not only strengthens educational outcomes, but also promotes pupils' social engagement, making them better prepared for the complex challenges of modern society.

About WON

Wetenschapsoriëntatie Nederland (WON) is a community of schools that together give science orientation an explicit place in the curriculum. Through ‘inquiry-based learning’ and ‘learning to investigate’, WON pupils develop academic skills and above all an academic attitude: curiosity, nuance and a critical view of the world around them. WON Netherlands is supported by a national organisation consisting of a national board, a programme office and an Advisory Board. These groups work closely together to facilitate cooperation between participating schools and support curriculum development. Coordinators play a key role in connecting schools, guiding quality assurance, and stimulating regional and thematic meetings. Together, they have built a network that now consists of about 50 schools, which continues to grow through continuous knowledge sharing and innovation within education.
