Energy Innovation NL drives the Netherlands’ energy transition by fostering innovation and cooperation among companies, knowledge institutions, and governments.
The Energy Top Sector promotes the innovations essential for the transition to a sustainable, affordable and reliable energy system. This is achieved through intensive cooperation between companies, knowledge institutions, governments and civil society organisations.
The Energy Top Sector aims for a fully sustainable energy supply in the Netherlands by 2050, with a CO2 reduction of 80-95% compared to 1990. This is in line with international and national climate goals, such as the Paris Climate Agreement, the Climate Accord and the Climate Act, which form the framework for the Dutch energy transition. The sector supports this with the Multiyear Mission Driven Innovation Programmes (MMIPs) and the Integrated Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (IKIA), which encourage innovation in all links of the energy supply chain.
The Energy Top Sector plays a crucial role in accelerating the energy transition by focusing on technological innovations and human capital. Through the Human Capital Agenda (HCA), it invests in the development of a well-trained workforce that can realise the energy transition. This includes developing new training courses, encouraging lifelong learning, and strengthening cooperation between education and business. These efforts contribute to the realisation of national and international climate agreements, including the National Energy System Programme and the Energy Agreement.
Energy Innovation NL, in collaboration with Topconsortia Kennis en Innovatie (TKI), acts as an ‘organizing capacity’ for the Dutch energy transition. Their core tasks include programming in partnership with knowledge institutions, companies, and governments, building Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), and disseminating knowledge.
The approach is driven by three agendas:
1. Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (KIA): The backbone of the sector, addressing research and innovation across all themes and Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), with a focus on cross-sectoral approaches.
2. International Export and Knowledge Agenda: Enhances export opportunities and attracts foreign investments in energy technologies.
3. Human Capital Agenda (HCA): Bridges the gap between the demand for skilled workers and the educational supply, promoting innovative curricula and lifelong learning.
This comprehensive approach ensures that the sector not only meets current energy needs but also prepares for future challenges by fostering a sustainable, knowledge-driven energy ecosystem.
